One of the things that makes Vancouver great is its public amenities. Kitsilano Pool, for example, is one of the world’s greatest. At 150 meters, it’s about six times the length of a typical competition pool. I swam there yesterday and it was a fantastic experience, with Stanley Park and downtown just across English Bay, and people sunning themselves on a nearby sand beach.
And then there’s the bureaucratic side of having strong municipal governance. This hammock was strung off to the side of the pool, in a place no one would ever use it, with a sign with hundreds of words of warnings, rules and guidance. One of the things about running a city is knowing when to stop.
